A breif history of the Nirranda Football Netball Club
The Mighty Blues can look back proudly over a history of more than a hundred years during which they have competed with success in several different competitions. The club is located in the heart of dairy farming country, on the Great Ocean Road, approximately 35 kilometres east of Warrnambool and consequently draw players and supporters from a wide geographical area. We see ourselves at Nirranda as not just a football and netball club, but play our part as the major hub of the community in the South West District.
Both Football and netball in the Nirranda district has a long and proud history. The club was especially successful during the 1950s and ‘60s, contesting half a dozen grand finals in both decades for a total of eight premierships. The 1970s spawned another couple of flags, while the early 1980s produced four successive grand final appearances for three losses and a win. Initially there were clubs from both Nirranda and Nirranda South until an amalgamation of the clubs took place in 1976.
Nirranda’s involvement in the Warrnambool and District Football League dates back to 1992. The club also enetered our first netball team in th WDFNL in 1992 season and have a very successful history.
In the early part of the 20th century several players moved to VFL teams. More recently, Paul Couch began his early football career at the club, before proceeding to Warrnambool Football Club where he was recruited by Geelong (AFL). In cricket, another former club junior, Tim Ludeman played with the South Australian Redbacks.
